In Balinese culture, if someone is hurt or sick, they turn to a Balian, a healer, rather than run to the pharmacy like we Aussies.

These Balians are said to have received the gift of healing passed down to them from their previous generations of healing elders and are revered as being respected more than any doctor.

So when my husband, who has been dealing with chronic back pain for many years, found himself flat on his back during our last trip to Bali, I thought, Let’s try something completely alternative.

When you have nothing to lose except your rupiah, it’s worth a try!

You must understand this was not “My back is a little sore from carrying the wife’s suitcase." This was full-blown, agonizing, I can’t sit, I can’t stand, I can’t go to the toilet, and I can’t even drink a Bintang” type of howling agony.
